Edward

Another year, another post inspired by Jay Leyda’s Years and Hours of Emily Dickinson:
 1861
BEFORE DECEMBER 6. Edward Dickinson receives a request from his new grandson (via Susan): I have been in this great world ever so many days, and have’nt got any name yet but Jackey— My Mother says you have a very nice name, and I may ask you if I can’t have one just like it— If you are willing such a little bit of a man should have such a big name like yours, please tell me—
DECEMBER 6. Edward Dickinson replies: I have recd your letter, asking me if I am willing that you should have a name like mine— And I say, in this reply, which you can read, as well as you could write the other, that if you will be a good boy, ride in your carriage & not cry, and always mind your father and mother, I will consent to your being called Edward Dickinson; and promise you a Silver Cup to drink from, as soon as you are big enough to hold it in your hands. Your affectionate Grandfather. . .
